The Urgency of Preparing Students for the Future of Work
After 25 years in education, I can say with confidence: today’s students are facing challenges unlike anything I’ve seen before. Their attention is constantly pulled by devices (which is why the recent bans and enforcement of no phones in class is a good thing). Many lean on AI tools to do the thinking for them. Resilience, once something students developed through trial and error, is harder to come by. If schools don’t adapt, we risk graduating students who are unprepared for the realities of college, career, and life.
The truth is, the future of work is shifting faster than most schools can keep up. As NPR recently highlighted, the most critical skills are not just technical. Employers are hungry for adaptability, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration. If we don’t prioritize these in our classrooms, we’re setting students up to fall short in the very areas that will determine their success.
The Skills That Matter Most
The World Economic Forum’s 2025 Future of Jobs Report makes it clear: resilience, analytical and creative thinking, empathy, adaptability, and leadership are the skills students will need to thrive. But too often, schools focus narrowly on test prep or technical skills while these “human” skills get pushed to the background. The gap is widening between what schools teach and what the workforce demands.
The AI Factor
Add AI to the mix, and the challenge becomes even more urgent. Research out of MIT shows that over-reliance on tools like ChatGPT can impact recall, executive functioning in the prefrontal cortex, and the deep learning students need for long-term growth. In other words, if students use AI passively, it can actually weaken their ability to think critically and learn deeply.
But here’s the other side of the story: when used wisely, AI can be empowering. It can fuel creativity, accelerate problem-solving, and expand access to knowledge. The difference comes down to the skills of the learner. Do they have the self-control, resilience, and relational intelligence to use AI as a tool rather than a crutch?
The Opportunity for Schools
This is where schools have a choice. We can ignore the shifts, or we can lean in and prepare students to succeed in this new landscape. The opportunity is real, and it’s urgent.
That’s why we built GRiT.
GRiT is a curriculum designed to do more than check a box for “soft skills.” It intentionally develops resilience, relational intelligence, and the essential human skills students need to be career, college, and life-ready. It gives students structured opportunities to practice — not just talk about — the very skills that the world’s top employers and researchers agree are most critical. And because GRiT is rooted in neuroscience, it equips students with an understanding of how their brains learn, adapt, and grow. They learn to know themselves so they can lead themselves, a critical foundation for both personal and professional leadership.
How GRiT Aligns With the Future of Work
The alignment is clear:
- Resilience → GRiT builds habits, teaches students to persist through setbacks, and emphasizes effort over time as the foundation for growth.
- Analytical and Creative Thinking → Students engage in reflective journaling, problem-solving, and projects that demand deeper thinking.
- Empathy and Communication → Team dynamics lessons, intentional vs. accidental language, and mentoring practices foster authentic relational intelligence.
- Adaptability and Self-Management → GRiT equips students with tools for mindset, emotional regulation, and goal setting.
- Leadership and Influence → Through the Sherpa model, students learn to lead by serving, coach their peers, and engage with their communities.
These aren’t abstract lessons. They’re lived experiences that students practice, reflect on, and carry forward.
The Time to Act Is Now
Here’s the bottom line: schools that delay risk leaving students behind in an AI-driven, rapidly changing economy. Schools that take action now can equip students with durable, future-proof skills that will serve them for life.
The future of work isn’t waiting, and neither can we.
